The audio file format WAV was developed by Microsoft and has become so widespread today that is already referred to as a standard PC audio file format. A Wave file may be identifiable by the file name extension of WAV which is (.wav). This type of audio file format is primarily used in PCs and it has been accepted as a practicable interchange medium for other computer programs including Macintosh. For example, this will allow developers to move audio files freely between platforms for processing.
One feature of the Wave file format is its ability to store various information about the file such as the number of tracks (mono or stereo), sample rate, bit depth, and as well as the uncompressed raw audio data.
The Resource Interchange File Format or RIFF is where the WAV format was based. The RIFF works by storing audio files in ‘chunks’ and ‘sub-chunks.’ RIFF was reciprocally based on the Interchange File Format or the IFF which was established by Electronic Arts during the year 1985. This file format was used primarily for electronic gaming. Apple had also come up with their own version of the IFF and called it the AIFF which stands for Audio Interchange File Format and released in during the year 1988 for Macintosh computers. Because of the common roots that these various audio formats have, however, they are able to play on any computer system be it IBM or Apple.
The WAV format or what is sometimes known as the WAVE or the Waveform, was developed originally by Microsoft with the purpose of storing audio information. For many years now, the WAV has been used to make audio sound files available to computer users all over the world. In particular, WAV files have found their commonplace use as the various alerts become available for Microsoft Windows. A good example of this would be that you can use the WAV file when recording your own voice and saying ‘you are receiving an internet communication’ instead of the plain and usual ‘you’ve got mail’ as notification for when you email has arrived.
Converting WAV to text can be done with the use of software or byhiring an online transcribing service and letting them transcribe the audio file at affordable transcription prices. Many people don’t want to use software because it is less accurate. When they are using a transcription service company, the accuracy is a lot better. The turnaround time may be longer but you can expect to have 99% accuracy with the document compared to using software.
As with any product or service, there are certain advantages and disadvantages that the WAV files possess. This will depend entirely on what you are looking for. And while it has various advantages, there is also a bad side to it because even though they work for basic sounds in most computers, this file type is not the best file format for musical recording due to a variety of reasons.
Advantages:
WAV files are considered as "lossless" files which mean that the WAV file does not lose any of its quality when it is stored unlike MP3 files which are considered at “lossy” files.
Due to the fact that the WAV file is lossless, it is considered as High Fidelity while MP3 files in comparison cannot be considered so. Obviously, there are also other factors to be considered here such as the quality of the recording equipment being used which will determine whether a WAV file will turn out to be High Fidelity.
WAV files are relatively easy to manipulate and so this allows easier editing. The manipulation of WAV files may also be done with the built-in Windows Sound Recorder. In this regard, WAV files are more versatile than other files such as MP3s.
Disadvantages:
WAV files don't have the same sorts of compression rates that MP3 files have. This means that a WAV file will be significantly larger compared to an MP3 file, taking up much more space on your computer's hard drive.
WAV files were originally a single (mono) channel but this has changed in recent years and WAV files now allow multiple channels for surround sound. If you have an older version of Windows, however, or an older WAV file, you may be stuck with a single audio channel.
WAV files have limited hours of audio with a maximum size of 4 gigabytes or no more than 6 hours of audio. There is no limit for other file formats.
